Is this a crypto-reactionary step backwards towards humanism, sentimentalism, positivism and the whole gamut of bad isms that the vanguard 20th-century novel expended so much effort overcoming – and, moreover, a step backwards enabled by some of that vanguard’s own techniques? It’s hard to say.

I didn't read the article yet, but on the LRB I clicked on a banner ad for the first time ever. It said: "Should philosophy interfere in the world?" When I clicked, it took me to Amazon for "Philosophy in the Present" by Badiou & Zizek, which claims to answer that question.
I'm amazed to see an ad for a philosophy book on the web, but there's something depressing about seeing continental philosophy advertised in the LRB--I can't imagine seeing ads for analytic philosophy books anywhere, even ones about topics like that (if there were any). Why are there no anglophones writing about this? Do we have to leave it to people like Zizek? (I have not read anything by Zizek ever, but I was told I didn't need to.)
Now I'll go and read the article. I enjoyed the Beauvoir one.
