Things have been rather difficult lately for various reasons.

I'm going to New York tomorrow to talk to some people; I'll be there until the 14th. Was thinking it might be nice to have an open brunch somewhere or other to meet any readers who'd like to show up; if anyone has suggestions for a venue I'd love to hear them.

  1. I'm so excited over the possibility of meeting you. I was quite envious of my friend Bill who got to meet you first in Boston, even though I introduced your work to him! You might consider grey dog chelsea if it's not on a weekend (too crowded). it's large, has good food, and you pay for your food before it's served so there's no pressure to leave. a lot of good places in the city are crowded on weekends, but a place like gascogne, which has a garden, would probably be able to seat a big group though it's more expensive.

I'm so tempted to just take off to New York, but that would be totally out of character and exactly what I want to do. Guess I'll just have to be there in spirit.

I am tempted too! The university would take a rather dim view of such flighty behavior, I suppose.

I guess in the end I don't really NEED to meet Helen in person in order to appreciate her; but it would be fairly fabulous.

@Nathaniel in California: Shouldn't meeting your favorite living author should somehow count as extra-curricular? I'm certain it should, though I think I'd have a hard time convincing my profs. And on a side note, it's nice to know I'm not the only Nathaniel out there. I have the sneaking suspicion I've met you before in one of Borges' dreams.

@Myself: That last post had one too many should's. Tone it down a bit.

  7. There's a great vegan restaurant in the Village called Caravan of Dreams, but the menu may be too exotic for some people's dining pleasure.

  11. Good Luck in New York, Helen. Wish I could be there, but I've got classes and family get togethers. Rats. Sorry.

  12. This is a great idea, and I'm really looking forward to it.

@anon: Balthazar's a great place, but if you're talking about the one in SoHo, it seems a bit too crowded and popular to bank on finding enough seats without a reservation.

But nearby in SoHo and LES, there are a lot of great cafes too. Top on my recommendations is McNally Jackson (who it turns out are enthusiastic fans of yours, Helen), since it's an attractive bookstore/cafe with ample seating. Housing Works Cafe is also close by, which almost never runs out of seating, which is a problem in NY.

  13. What do you think about brunch in Taipei instead? That'd save me some air fare. Anyone's welcome and I'll promise an array of savory foods with names that have no correlate in English.

  14. Stop talking about NEW YORK. I want to be there so badly I could cry! But right now, it's not an option.

    But soon soon soon!
