What children, in fact all of us at any age, find frightening is unreliability and emotional coldness. The idea that you can't affect someone, that you can't see where they're coming from and can change tack at any moment.

  1. I haven't read the Narnia books in many years, but I seem to recall that the only real, living characters were the lion, the four kids, and the protagonists of the individual stories. I don't recall the White Witch as seeming real at all. But maybe things are different in the movie version.

    I never read The Chronicles of Narnia as a child, nor as an adult.
